How to Name a Kingdom in Fiction
Kingdom names carry dynasty in a way republic names do not: many real kingdoms were named for ruling houses or founding kings, and fantasy inherits the convention (Gondor and Arnor are sibling realms of one royal line, and the naming shows it). Shared roots across neighboring kingdom names quietly tell a history of division, cadet branches, and old empire.
Style the name to the throne: high-fantasy kingdoms take sonorous, Latinate or archaic forms (Aldoria, Veythar), while grittier settings suit blunter Anglo-Saxon compounds (Westmark, Stonehold). And the definite article is free atmosphere: the Kingdom of the Reach sounds older than Reachland.
