How to Name an Island in Fiction

Island names split by who did the naming: inhabitants name islands for what they are (Rapa Nui, "great Rapa"), while sailors name them for what happened there, saints' days of discovery, wrecks, provisioning (the Canaries, Ascension, Cape Fear's whole coastline). That double register is the storytelling seam: the chart name and the local name of the same island can disagree, and the disagreement is a plot.

Phonetically, island chains reward family resemblance, sister islands sharing a root or suffix, and a lone island rewards strangeness. An island whose name no mainland language can parse announces its isolation before anyone lands.

Frequently asked questions

What is the -holm suffix?

Old Norse for "small island". Stockholm originally meant "log island". The suffix carries Viking-Age maritime weight, useful for Norse-flavored or Atlantic-island fantasy.

Are real islands like Avalon and Tortuga safe to use?

Avalon (Arthurian legend, 12th century) is public domain. Tortuga (Caribbean, 17th century pirate haven) is historical and freely usable. Both work for fiction set in those traditions.

Can these work for sci-fi sky-islands or cloud cities?

Adapt with care - the maritime register may not fit. For floating islands, consider mixing with planet-name registers (Aurinox above the Cloud Sea). For pure island-on-water settings, this generator is well-suited.
