Frequently asked questions

Why are Heian names so different from modern Japanese?

Heian aristocrats followed Chinese-influenced courtly convention. Long ornate names with classical kanji. Names like "Kaguya-hime" or "Hikaru Genji" are Heian-period; modern names are far shorter and less courtly.

Did commoners have names in Heian Japan?

Yes but they’re poorly recorded. Court records preserve aristocratic names; peasants typically appear in records by occupation or village. Our Heian pool focuses on the aristocratic register documented in classical literature.

How does this work for Genji retellings?

Excellent. The Tale of Genji is public domain, and our Heian pool reflects the same naming conventions Murasaki Shikibu used. For direct retellings, primary sources should still be consulted; for Genji-influenced original fiction, this generator gives period-authentic foundation.
